Newcastle University Society & Health Lecture 2012

August 14th 6pm  Newcastle City Hall

PLUS:- Newcastle Local Government Elections Event

At our most recent meeting, the New Institute, formed in 2004, undertook a new phase of development.  The growing interest and continuing success of the Institute’s activities has indicated a need to build an identity and structure to support further development, and to clarify the Institute’s future role, particularly at a time of great change in Newcastle.  This change includes formally rebadging as the ‘Newcastle Institute’.   The core commitment of the Institute remains to independence and to fostering development and exchange of ideas, without taking ‘a position’ on any issue.

On August 14th, the Newcastle Institute’s regular monthly City Hall forum will join with the annual University of Newcastle’s Society & Health Lecture, by Cheryl Kernot, Director of Social Business, former Leader of the Australian Democrats, and ALP Shadow Minister.

NOTE the earlier time of 6pm.

“Challenging the orthodoxy! Social Entrepreneurs and Business with a Social Purpose”

The lecture will highlight the failure of the free market to provide fair access to the planet’s basic resources such as water and energy and to services such as health care, affordable housing and education has been a call to arms for a new breed of entrepreneurs who harness business knowledge and skills for social purpose, not for the profit of private shareholders.
